THEY: A non-binary coming out

THEY: A non-binary coming out story is a moving and timely documentary that offers an intimate look at the experience of coming out as non-binary in a world still dominated by binary gender expectations.

This socially impactful documentary combines real-life storytelling, emotional depth, and a minimalist visual aesthetic to offer a deeply human perspective on what it means to live as “they” in a society built around “he” and “she.”

Real stories, real struggles, real identity

The documentary follows Cailin, a young non-binary person who opens up about their personal journey—from early confusion and self-reflection to finding the words, the courage, and ultimately the pride in identifying as non-binary. The film also gives voice to Cailin’s family, who share their honest emotional responses, learning process, and growing understanding.

Set against a stark black room with creative use of mirrors—symbolizing self-reflection and internal identity—the film invites viewers to engage deeply with the lived experience of gender diversity.

“Gender is no longer binary,” the film’s narrator begins. “It is a spectrum—an evolving space of identity.”

The power and pain of visibility

THEY explores key themes including:

  • Coming out as non-binary

  • Using they/them pronouns

  • The emotional toll of being misunderstood

  • The importance of representation and self-made identity

“Being non-binary can feel isolating,” Cailin shares. “That’s why creating your own media, your own reflection, matters—it puts you in control of how you're seen.”

In addition to personal accounts, the documentary addresses broader societal issues, such as the lack of political representation for non-binary individuals, corporate pinkwashing, and the ongoing fight for legal and social recognition.
